How each appliance is estimated
The basic arithmetic is simple:
watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days per week ÷ 7 × 30 = kWh per month
A 55-watt electric fan running 10 hours a day, every day, uses about 16.5 kWh a month. Multiply that by the all-in rate per kWh and you have its share of your bill.
For most appliances that is the whole story. For anything with a compressor, it is not.
Why aircon and refrigerator numbers are usually wrong elsewhere
An aircon does not draw its rated wattage the entire time it is switched on. The compressor runs until the room reaches the set temperature, then cycles off, then back on. A refrigerator does the same thing all day.
Multiplying watts by hours ignores this and overstates the cost, often by a lot. We apply a duty cycle, the average fraction of rated watts the unit actually draws while running, so a 900-watt aircon on for 8 hours is estimated at roughly 5.4 kWh a day rather than 7.2.
Inverter models are modelled the same way, with a lower duty cycle. An inverter compressor slows down instead of switching fully on and off, so it draws a smaller average fraction of its rated watts. Its nameplate wattage is usually similar to a non-inverter unit. The saving comes from how it runs, not from a smaller number on the sticker. That is why the inverter toggle changes the estimate without changing the watts field.
The unaccounted row
If you enter what your meter actually recorded for the month, the calculator shows an Unaccounted row: the kWh on your meter that your appliance list does not explain.
Almost nobody accounts for everything on the first pass. That gap is usually some mix of:
- appliances left off the list, especially small ones that run constantly
- standby power from things plugged in but "off"
- hours-per-day estimates that are lower than reality
- an older or larger unit drawing more than the typical wattage we assume
The gap is the useful part. It tells you how much of your bill you have not yet explained, and it usually shrinks a lot once you add the things that run 24 hours a day: the router, the refrigerator, CCTV, a water dispenser.
About the wattage figures
The preset wattages are typical values for common Philippine models, and the duty-cycle factors are engineering estimates. They are provisional: we are verifying them against manufacturer and Department of Energy references, and any preset we cannot source will be corrected or removed. Our current sources and their status are listed on the methodology page.
Your own appliance is the better source. Most units have a nameplate sticker listing the actual wattage, usually inside the refrigerator door, on the back of a TV, or on the side of an aircon. Every field in this calculator is editable, so if you have the real number, use it.
About these estimates
This calculator estimates consumption from the values you enter. Real usage varies with the age and condition of the unit, room size and insulation, ambient temperature, and how the appliance is actually used. Costs are computed with the all-in effective rate from Meralco's current published residential schedule, which is an average rate across your whole bill rather than a marginal one. Treat the output as an informed estimate, not a measurement.
Frequently asked questions
How is each appliance's cost computed?
Watts × hours per day × days per week, adjusted by a duty cycle for appliances whose compressors switch on and off (aircon, refrigerators, freezers). A 900-watt aircon running 8 hours doesn't draw 900 watts the whole time, so calculators that multiply watts by hours overstate its cost. Costs use the all-in effective rate from Meralco's current official schedule.
Why is the inverter version cheaper?
Inverter compressors slow down instead of switching fully on and off, so they draw a smaller fraction of their rated watts on average. We model that as a lower duty cycle. The saving is real, but it depends heavily on usage patterns and room conditions, so treat it as an estimate.
My appliance total doesn't match my bill. Why?
That gap is the point. Enter the kWh from your bill and the calculator shows an 'Unaccounted' row: standby loads, appliances you haven't listed, or usage estimates that are off. Most households can't account for every kWh on the first pass.
Where do the wattage figures come from?
They're typical values for common Philippine models. Your actual appliance may differ, so check its nameplate sticker (usually inside the door or at the back) and edit the watts field. Every preset is editable.
