How the total is built

A SFELAPCO residential bill is the sum of several groups of charges. The largest is usually generation — the cost of the electricity itself. After that come transmission (moving power across the national grid), system loss, distribution (SFELAPCO's own delivery charge), government taxes, and universal charges mandated by law. Each is calculated per kilowatt-hour or as a fixed amount, then added together. Most of your bill is made up of costs SFELAPCO passes through from other providers, not charges SFELAPCO sets on its own.

The generation charge

Generation is the cost of producing the electricity you used, and it is usually the largest single part of your bill. SFELAPCO does not generate power itself — it buys electricity from power suppliers and passes that cost through to you without markup. Because it's a pass-through cost, the generation charge is not a source of profit for SFELAPCO, and it can differ from one month to the next depending on what power costs during that billing period. When your total bill changes even though your usage stayed about the same, the generation charge is the most common reason.

How SFELAPCO shows VAT

One thing that sets a SFELAPCO bill apart is how it shows value-added tax. Instead of a single VAT line, SFELAPCO itemizes VAT across several components — you'll see separate lines for VAT on generation, transmission, system loss, and distribution. The VAT is applied per component rather than as one lump sum, which is why the bill has more tax lines than you might expect. The total tax you pay is the sum of these lines.
